Assignment 2 -(2) Situation that reminds me of something that happened in my life

While reading the book, ‘The Road’, I could easily feel that this book was totally different from the books I’ve read before (though I’ve read very small amount of English books). When I was reading other books, I could at least understand basic information about the story, such as setting, characters, events, etc. However, right now, even I finished reading until page 50, I’m still having lots of difficulty understanding about basic information of this book.
By the way, I once was very glad while I was reading, because I could find can-be-understood events among those hard-to-understand stories. They were on the very first page (pg.3) and page 18. Those were a kind of descriptions of nightmares the man had had. Particularly, in his dreams, he once was with a beast, and once was with his dead wife in a scary image, one to one. And those descriptions made me remind of horrible nightmares I once had when I was young.
When I was in the elementary school 6th grade, I went to America for 2-month trip. For the first 30 days, I traveled western and eastern parts of the US with my grandparents, and for the next 30 days, we stayed in my cousin’s house located in LA. During the trip, it was a super fun. But as time passed by, I started to miss my family (which means my parents and older brother who was in Korea at that time) so much. I even was scolded by my grandparents for using international call for too long. Maybe, my strong wish (or desire) for meeting my family would have made such a scary night.
On that day, I went to bed, and fell asleep as usual. I played soccer and baseball so that I was really tired, and I remember that I fell asleep very fast after lying down on the bed. Suddenly, I was standing on somewhere. The place which is familiar to me, but not been seen for a long time. It was my house in Korea! I was really glad to be there and started to look around to find out where I was in my house. Even it was very dark, (it may have been night in my dream when I was visiting my house) I could soon realize that I was in my room. I was glad with joy, and started walking around the room. When I started my first step, I stepped on something. I wanted to find out what it was (or what those were), so I turned the light on. Well, to tell the truth, I think the light turned on by itself when I thought like ‘I want to find out what it is’. The first thing I saw was sticky blood all around my feet and my father, mother and brother lying down on the floor, covered with blood. They were half-opening their eyes and mouths. They seemed like they were beat and stabbed by somebody.
Even I was sleeping, I could feel that my body trembling in a moment, and without noticing, I was awake on the bed in my cousin’s house, covered with sweat and tears. It was a very short moment, but it also was very scary that I had to call my family right away to check if they were alive or not. As a person who had experienced similar thing with the man (especially, meeting someone who’s in a scary image), I could think about the man’s feeling once more when I was reading those parts. And those scary dreams could help me pay more attention to the stories while I was reading.

  1. wow, it must have been very scary for you to have a dream like that. I once had a dream where my mom died of a car accident and my father passed out after crying all night. Then in my dream, i was sleeping and I had a dream of my mom in a very scary looking face holding her portrait used at the funeral, and she was coming toward me. I woke up right that moment because I was so scared and went to my father and we cried together. When I really woke up from my sleep, I was crying so much that my dad had to come and see if I was okay. It was really interesting to have a dream in my dream. However, I would never want to have another dream about one of my family members or close friends dying like that.

  2. It is really nice that you related a certain part of the story to your real experience. I don't dream many times but I can remember one most fearful dream in my life. Before the day I dreamt, I broke my front teeth. And perhaps, the dream was because of that. There were so many teeth around me, and I had to find my teeth from that pile of teeth! It must have been smelly, too. Ha.

  3. Just hearing about your dream makes me shiver! I've never dreamt of someone dying, so, I can't understand it as much as other students did. However, the scariest dream that I have ever had was a ghost dream. I was lying on my bed, and there was a green creature jumping on my stomach. I couldn't move and even though I didn't see the creature clearly, I was so scared. And then, when I finally managed to look at the ceiling, I saw a girl ghost's black head hanging above me. Then, I woke up over and over but didn't actually wake up. In that morning, I was sweating all over! Anyways, I really feel bad for you to have such a sad dream.

  5. Reading your posting, I was really impressed by how well you connected the book to your own experience. Actually, I wondered if I can find any similar experience to this book because as you said, there's no really any special event through this part. In addition, the entire mood and the atmosphere of this part are very serious and little scary. So I thought that there would not be much things that reminds me of similar experience. But when I read yours, I felt as if it was my experience. I think you successfully delivered the mood and your feelings to the readers. And it really helped me understand the book's overall atmosphere as well. Thanks for sharing your personal experience! :)

  6. It was interesting to know about your own experience. While I read the book I couldn't find any smilar ideas related to me. Thanks to you I got a chance to think about it. Actually I have never dreamed of someone dying but it really scared me when I read yours. The most terrifying dream I ever had was someone chasing me. I couldn't see who it was but I heard the tapping sound. I started to run with all my strength but the strange thing was I couldn't go forward and the tapping sound was right behind me. When I got up in the morning, because of the dream I was sweating all over and my legs were worn out. Anyway I think you delinated your dream well enough for others to agree with you.

  7. You had a really scary dream. I never had a scary dream so I couldn't really think about anything when I was reading the first part of the story. I was very impressed to see you well connecting the story and your own experience. It was very easy to understand. Well, I wish I had a scary dream like yours so I can imagine while I read the first part of the book again lol ~

  8. Oh! It's so spooky. I liked the idea that you connected your personal experience with the events happening in the story. In some ways I feel sorry for you that you had a dream of your family dying. You must have been really tired! I also had bad memories. Once I dreamt that my cute little brother was kidnapped by some crazy old woman. My father and I tried really hard to find him, running around downtown and searching for him everywhere, but there weren't any good results. My dream ended like that and at the moment I woke up, I rushed to my brother and hugged him to make sure that he was actually ALIVE! Well, bad dreams can be horrible. We should never think negatively or cry before we go to bed. That might help ourselves from dreaming nightmares.
    Anyways, good work☆

  9. Great post, Joon. You've hit upon a major motif in this novel--nightmares/dreams. Everyone should pay attention to the author's use of dreams throughout the book.

Also, from the comments we can see that everyone can relate to the experience of scary dreams. Yours is particularly frightening, but interesting that it took place on a journey far from what you knew (Korea) just like the man...

  11. It was very interesting to see you relating your experience with what had happened in this book. It must have been an extremly disturbing nightmare you had when you were in America.
I can say that I, myself had lots of nightmares but yours is just like a horror movie censored to underage.
