Assignment for p200~250

p. 200 is starting with the dialogue between the father and his son, but this time, it seems that the roll of the father and his son is changed, upside down. Before this scene, it was always the man who suggested that they should keep going; however, from now on, the little boy is suggesting it, which means the boy became much more active and took up some roll of his father. Probably, this is because the boy is getting used to the post apocalyptic world faster and faster. We can see this when the boy does not get shocked even though he sees an infant being eaten. Finishing this dialogue, they set out again on the road and keep going. At the next page, the boy asks his father, “Can I go ahead?” Isn’t this kind of progress surprising? He had not made any choices even the smallest ones, but now, he wants to go ahead. He flips and flails his arms running as if nothing disgusting had happened just before.

Walking on the road, the child finds a big house, and again, our hungry and curious father wants to take a look at it in order to search any edible food. The boy, at this time, gets scared of getting in there as usual as before, maybe because of the shock after seeing “human food” under the hatch. So even though it is getting quite dark, they make a travel to that house. The house contains a lot of things including a warm hearth, delicious stored food, some blankets and clothes. After making it sure that there was nobody living in or staying around there, they remain in that shelter for four years. One day they decide to start walking again, heading the coast where the man and the boy longed to go. Walk, walk, and walk. They eventually arrive at the coast that was motionless, gray, and unlively. The boy who expected a beautiful and blue ocean gets so disappointed that he bursts into tears after swimming in that ash covered water. Freezing cold. The boy gets sick and feverish, and his father also suffers from fatigue. At this time the God help them by giving them a chance to look into a wrecked boat in which lots of useful things including first aid kits, some waterproofed cloths, and what most makes the boy excited, a flare gun.

They store what they found in the boat on the cart, and again, start walking along the beach, but they had to stop because the boy left the pistol on the beach. Even though it was already dark, and the man could realize that it would be darker soon, they return to the beach and find it. At that time nothing could be seen but sometimes a flash of lightning. Even worse, it rains, but the cautious father hears a patter sound which was made by their tarp. After sleeping under there they go up on the road.

  1. Although this post is late, your observations are astute as usual, especially about the evolving relationship between the father and son. I'm curious why you see God as providing the boat (I'm not saying you're wrong, just would like to see you support this with the text in some ways).
