Infant scene

First of all, I feel really sorry to post a writing about this scene;;

But this scene wouldn't leave my mind for hours after finishing the reading so I decided to shake off the thoughts after posting this... T T

198pg

He was standing there checking the perimeter when the boy turned and buried his face against him. He looked quickly to see what had happened. What is it? he said. What is it? the boy shook his head. Oh Papa, he said. He turned and looked again. What the boy had seen was a charred human infant headless and gutted and blackening on the spit. He bent and picked the boy up and started for the road with him, holding him close. I'm sorry, he wihispered. I'm sorry

So... this was what the boy possibly might have seen ^^;;

1) Figure of speech

a) Understatement : If you look at the boy't reaction toward this, it's too faint. If this happened in this world we are living in, it would shock many people and hunt them for many days. However, the boy shows no special sympathy toward what he had just seen and instead, he rather looks like an old man full of experience and has no heart left to cry over any tragedy.

b) Style : Cormac McCarthy wrote this book very objectively. He shows no especial emotion toward happenings. Also, whenever a pitiable scene is described, he uses 'the boy' as an observer so he could emphasize the tragedy happened to the world.

c) Total effect : Including this scene, in the story, cannibalism is mentioned several times. Due to this, readers get an impression that the world the man and the boy is living in is hopeless and despairing. Furthermore it implies that there are now no more morality existing in this world and people are now more like an animal which even kills its fellows if it is neccessary for living.

2) My explanation to this scene

The night before the boy and the man finds out this infant turned into a piece of meat, the man observes three man and a pregnant woman walking across the bridge. If we suppose that this pregnant woman weren't a captive of any kind, it can be said that there is no humanity to be expected from this world. Mother's instinctive love is often said to be the most powerful thing. However, the world, where even mothers deceive their children is more like a jungle where you have no one to rely on but your intuition and luck. Maybe this, knowing that even motherhood doesn't work properly and eat the child she bore for 10 months, shocked me and made me disgusted. Infants are symbolic as a pure spirit and sancity of birth, but in this context, holiness and sanctity of life is ignored and used as a measure to feed on.

My sudden thougt is however, if this act is moral no, I mean the best solution the remaning people could have. What I thought then, was if it's better to eat an infant than a person who would possibly feel more fear and pain only if the cannibalism is really the only answer to this situation. It is inhumane and insane to start thinking about eating an infant but the world these people are living in is insane. Just almost impossible to remain moral.

However, still there remains some food, and the boy and the man keep proving that surviving on human food is possible, cannibalsim makes me think about morality. Eating people could be said as easier way to sustain life. There's no one there to scold you about wrongdoings and it seems to be quite a trend to eat human. The idea of cannibalism when the catastrophy happens, is persuasive after following the boy in the story. I think I might rather kill myself when the world is hopless enough to eat human meat, but would there be some people who would want to continue their lives still?

  2. It was extrmely disgusting to see a scene like this. I almost threw the book away saying to myself " The book is turning insane every moment!! and Why on earth is the author describing this specifially?" Eating a samll infant is a thing that can't be accepted. It's something that would'nt happen and shouldn't happen ever! Sacrificing a unprotected baby who does not know anything is not something a rational human being can do! I guess this shows that people are now turning into creatures that have no guilt, no feelings. and this is actually sad and I try to understand the people considering the fact that they are in a desperate situation but I just can't!

  3. When I read that part, I also felt something cold crawling down my back, maybe because I was scared. I almost forgot about the scene when the man and the boy saw 3 men and pregnant woman going somewhere. I don't know if it's mentioned in the book since the story was complicated (or else I didn't understand it) but if you found the connection between two scenes by yourself, I guess you did a very good job... Well, I know I shouldn't say something like this in this situation, but you drawing look.. a bit cute to me... haha :)

  4. This scene was extremely terrifying and gross. I would have never imgagined such a thing. The woman trying to eat her baby? It is un imaginable. I think you drew your picture really well like always.:) And thank you for giving the baby a head. If there was none, I would have been totally grossed out!
    And good job on summarizing each litery terms. I think it was very creative.

  5. Joanne,I really liked(?) your picture even if I still don't understand why you picked that scene to draw. It's really disgusting and very sad at the same time. How could a mother even try to eat her baby even if it were for her own survival! I just really don't get it.
    Also I that you mentioned lots of intensive knowledge such as the consideration for morality. I was very impressed. Overall, I do agree with your point and cannibalism should just not be tolerated even in harsh situations.
    Good job★

  6. I kept thinking like 'That baby! That pregnant woman! Baby! Woman! Is that her baby?? If then, what on earth is the mother doing? She had that baby inside her for 9 months, just to eat it? Is she insane?' But I think we should give her the benefit of doubt. It might not be her baby, and it might not be them eating the baby. It's too gross to think about.

  7. Oh, I didn't know that the baby in that scene was the infant the pregnant woman from the previous scene had been boring... If I knew that I would have been more disgusted reading the scene...!! Now I see... Ugh... It's a disgusting world...! But still, I'm afraid I'll be scolded to say a thing like this, but I see some point in their killing the baby, not to say eating the baby. The mother needs to eat twice more to produce milk for the baby. Actually it's unbelievable how she could stand ten months of pregnancy since there's not enough food in this world to support an extra life. ...Of course there was cannibalism for them, but still! I think even for the badguys it's hard to feed an extra person and keep that person be safe. ... I cannot see why the woman had a baby in the first place!!

    Just one more thing to say. I like your drawing a lot. :) Even if the scene is horrible, I think you used humor well to make it bearable. How nice!

  8. I can see that you have the most comments here since it is very... I can't find the exact word for it. Also, your drawing is ㅋㅋ very artistic... ^^;; I agree that this part was really creepy but, I couldn't nothing like compared to the scene where they found people naked in the cellar waiting to be eaten. I agree that it might be better for them to eat infant... then to eat adults... no!!! I don't know what I'm saying! Eating human is wrong even if it's an adult or an infant. IT's just wrong... I would rather want to die than to live in a world like that.

  9. You were quite astute in connecting the three men and the pregnant woman to the ones who abandoned the fire, although it's not exactly clear in the text they are the same people, it does seem implied. We don't know if she's a captive, it is so bleak to think of anyone consuming infants.

    I do have to disagree that the boy had no emotional reaction. I found his reaction very powerful and honest as one of shock.
