Seora- Writing a letter to the boy

Just wondering,,, How did this book win the Pulitzer Award?? It's awful!! ㅠㅠ I hate to see how he depicted human beings in the post-apocalyptic, so selfish, brutal and uncaring for those other than themselves. I can understand that the world they're living in is so insane and inhumane. With all those ashes blowing, it must be hard to even breathe. However, I'm sure that most, I mean, all of you will agree with me that even in the post-apocalyptic situation, human beings themselves are the most threatening existence. Therefore, I think the boy will be having the most difficult time of all above others in the book because he doesn't fully understand the human nature of survival and since his mental strength are still weak.

Dear boy
Hi, this is the second time I am writing to you. No, I'm sorry. I can't really remember to whom I wrote to in the first place. However, I'm pretty sure that it was you, since I think that you are having the most difficult time even then and now. I was wondering while I was reading you and your dad's journey. How old are you? If the world was normal, you should be in elementary school right? It's a shame that you don't get to enjoy your natural life with all of the other kids that could have been your friends at school. I'm writing this letter to you, because I want to tell you something about your dad. Have you noticed that he has been sick these days? Whenever you're sleeping, he's been walking somewhere along to not wake you up because he coughs too much. I'm not sure yet, but I think he might have been thinking about death recently. Probably. The situation is becoming worse and worse since the food is becoming scarce and there are others, the "bad guys" that awaits them outside in the road, to eat them. Just make sure that the reason he is alive is because of you. If it weren't for you, he wouldn't be here, and if it weren't for him, you wouldn't be here either. You are his only hope and he is your only hope. At least for now since you are growing and becoming mature while your father is becoming weak. And I assure you that the time will come when you have to take care of your father instead of him taking care of you. One more thing. You meet many other people out in the road all the time. Sometimes it could be the good guys and sometimes it's the bad guys. But whenever you see one of the good guys or people who needs help, you need to learn how to resist that urge about helping them. You have to think what you would have done if you were in his shoes. The most important thing for him is to protect you, so he basically have no other choice then to say no to you. So please don't blame your dad for not helping the poor. I only have a few more pages left. I hope you don't lose hope during the remaining chapters and keep on going because that's what the "good guys" do. They never give up! Bye! Love ya~

  1. I'm also worried that it might be really scary to be on the road which is full of enemies on it. Bad guys sound so cruel, aren't they? If I were him, I might complain and be scared of everything every time I face the dangers....It was such a good letter anyway :)

  2. Seora--the Pulitzer is giving for quality of writing, not choice of subject matter. It is difficult to deny the emotional power and the accomplishment of McCarthy's prose, even if you may find his story distasteful.

I wonder if the boy is as wrong about helping people as the man seems to think he is...
