The three quotes from The Road

This time, I started to find interesting and very exciting about this book while I was reading it which is very good. Of course it was still hard but there were some more things happening in this part so that I could really concentrate and keep focusing on the book. There were some parts that I was really impressed and I would like to talk specifically about three quotes from the book.

First quote;
“You put it in your mouth and point it up. Do it quick and hard. Do you understand? Stop crying. Do you understand?
……. Say yes I do Papa. Yes I do Papa” -pg 113
Actually this part was one of the most touching and sad scene that I’ve read until now. Nobody would know how it feels like to teach one’s own son to commit suiside. The situatioin was so bad that there was no choice for the man to make. Maybe it was the best idea the man could do for the son because it would have been better to die rather than to be eaten by cannibals. However, it really pains me to think of how much the boy felt terrified. Imagine your father pushing a revolver into and forcing you to kill yourself. It’s terrible. Anyways, he decided not to, but it still affected to boy a lot. We can see that the boy was trying to avoid the pistol on page 137.
“ If you don’t want to hold the lamo you’ll have to take the pistol.
I’ll hold the lamp”

I think that this part shows how much the boy was terrified and affected by the situation.

Second quote;
“ That’s okay. I think there may be things in there and we have to take a look. There’s no place else to go. This is it.” -pg 137
This was when the man and the boy find the bunker filled with ‘everything’. However, they encountered with a serious danger once before in the similar bunker. So when the man tried to go and check the inside of the bunker, the boy begged him not to go. What I noticed was that they (especially the man) really were in a fix which means that there was nothing elso to do but put themselves into a danger to search for food. The man didn’t know what kind of obstacles might be under the bunker, but he had to do it. The man is very strong and brave, I think.

Third quote;
“Because we’re the good guys.
Yes.
And we’re carrying the fire.” –pg 129
“Well I don’t think we’re likely to meet any good guys on the road.
We’re on the road.” –pg 151

One of the most frequently mentioned words in this book is ‘the good guys’ which comes from the boy’s lines. Sometimes I feel like the boy clings to being ‘good guys’ because his judgement of others is whether he/she is good or not. He believes that they are good guys so that they don’t do anything bad like bad guys do. We can find this from the second quote. When the man said the there would not be any good guys on the road, the boy said that they were there. It means they, the good guys are still on the road. I came to wonder if the boy really know what exactly ‘being good guys’ means. Well I don’t even know exactly, but I guess it’s kind of consolation so that the boy could withstand all the terrible situation before him. Beside, the words ‘carrying the fire’ also means the similar thing. Anyways I really pity him in his distress.

  1. Harin! You posted your assignment first. You also used your class computer? haha
    Anyways, I also did the 3 quotes assignment and I was really surprised that we had diffrent quotes incited. However I could see that we had some common points like the man and the boy being in a harsh condition.
    Moreove I can't agree more with you on your opinion about the scene where the man teaching his son how to commit a suicide being very sad and tragic. It's really ironical as well.
    you did a good job I'll give you a star★hehe

  2. Wow! Your work was extremely interesting!!!!
    I never thought that writing about three quotes could be this interesting.

    I was also very curious about what the standard for 'the good guys'
    Before I read your writing I just thought that the good guys mean people who aren't cannibals. However now that I think of it, the man seems to think of the good guys as only him and the boy. In this situation it may mean that the good guys are people who don't hurt the boy.

    Anyways, that's my thought..
    I really enjoyed your writing and the part where you felt pity, I did too! ^^

  3. The part wherer the man teaches the boy to kill himself!
    Meanwhile, if I were the man, I would have told him the same thing. I believe it's better to die with the dignity.
    I think that was the most depressing scene in this week's part. I almost felt the same as you! Yet, your in-depth observation helped me to think it more closely.

  4. Annie--very good question about Harin's observations about "the good guys."

    Do you both think that the man and the boy may disagree about what makes a person a "good guy" or not?

    Great choices for quotes, Harin. The scene where the man is yelling at his son about killing himself is just heartbreaking. Keep watching out for what "carrying the fire" could mean.

  5. You have the same quote as I had! "We're carrying the fire..." that one! At first, I didn't understand the meaning of that sentence. But now we know it represented Prometheus(Is the spelling right?) since Diana teacher kindly explained it to us :) Good work, girl~<3
