Week3-Three Quotes(Pg.100~150) -Jessie

Quote #1
(Pg.127)
They're going to kill those people, arent they?
Yes.
Why do they have to do that?
I dont know.
Are they going to eat them?
I dont know.
They're going to eat them, arent they?
Yes.
And we couldnt help them because then they'd eat us too
Yes
And that's why we couldnt help them.
Yes.
Okay.

This part was where the man and the boy actually saw people getting eaten by others. The boy is now talking about those naked and burnt people in the house which they escaped from, and he is extremely scared of it and the thoughts that they might be able to get eaten by others, too. You can see how the apocalypse changed everyone. Everyone going crazy because of the starvation and the only one will to survive at the end. I can understand that the man couldn't try to help those people since he might have been in danger at that moment, too. It might be seen as the man's cold-heartedness which has come out from the competition to survive, but I'm almost sure that nobody could be brave and sacrifice his or her life for those alreay-close-to-death people, either. If it was a real situation, it might be more horrible and terrifying....If you face the situation in visuals...

Quote #2
(Pg.129)
We wouldnt ever eat anybody, would we?
No. Of course not.
Even if we were starving?
We're starving now.
You said we werent.
I said we werent dying. I didnt say we werent starving.
But we wouldnt.
No. We wouldnt.
No matter what.
No. No matter what.
Because we're the good guys.
Yes.
And we're carrying the fire.
And we're carrying the fire. Yes.
Okay.

Just to talk about what I felt and thought, it seems like both the man and the boy's nerves are on the edge, because of the life which is getting worse and worse. They keep emphasizing that they're good guys, and to me, it sounds like a spell to comfort themselves and to self-rationalize. It is not a serious argument but we can find more and more big and small struggles between these two as we read through the book. Fear of death is threathing their lives day by day... I can't assure that they aren't going to eat anybody even when they get to the end of their patience, but as long as they keep their promise and control themselves, it can be possible to remain as "real humans", not cannibals. I have a question on this quote, also. I don't understand what they meant by "carrying the fire"... What has the fire got to do with telling whether they are good people or not? (Can somebody tell me about your interpretation?)

Quote #3
(Pg.138~139)
Come down. Oh my God. Come down.

Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Cannced hams. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs. Paper towels, toiletpaper, paper plates. Plastic trashbags stuffedwith blankets. He held his forehead in his hand.
...
I found everything. Everything. Wait till you see.
...
Can you see? he said. Can you see?
...
Pears. That says pears.
Yes. Yes it does. Oh yes it does.

Maybe this part shows the happiest moment of the man so far. We can see that he's really in a good mood since they found plenty of food, which is a lot more than they've expected to get from anywhere. Foods in great condition. What in the world would be better than the food to the man and the boy? Food is the thing they've been looking for so long, and at that moment, they were starved to death. The man is extremely excited and can't stop himself from expressing his feeling. I am so happy to see HIM being happy since he is the one who had to overcome all the obstacles for himself and his beloved son at the same time. I wish that would help them survive as long as they can. But I don't think they should relax themselves just because they got the food to eat. There can be more dangers ahead of them and the food is just the tools they can use to survive at the end. I hope their will be blessings and luck in their coming future.

  1. Wow~ though it was extremely short time for everyone to finish homework, I guess you tried your best to complete you homework 'completely'
    haha :)
Especially the second quote you chose made me remind what's happening and what's going to happen in the story. As story goes on, I think boy's suspicion toward if they really are good guys or not is getting bigger and bigger. I didn't read the whole story, but continuation of boy's suspicion makes me doubt about what is going to happen next... They may kill someone... or they would have to eat someone... unlike what boy was thinking...

I am going to pay special attention to how boy's thought toward 'good guys and bad guys' change...
I was pleased to read yours :)

  2. Wow~ Jessie, I can see that you thought a lot while you were reading the book! :D
I think being the good guys is what keeps the man and the boy alive. They do not want to lose humanity. They want to stay as a human. They see their purpose of their life to be carrying the fire (I do not see the exact meaning of the fire, though. I asked that too in my post. Sorry~) and thus they are good guys. If they eat other people, then they become bad guys, and they lose their purpose of life. Because of that, I think the man and the boy won't be cannibals unless the situation becomes too extreme. :)

  3. Well, I like your quotes! They are some of the most important parts of the book and I believe you understand not only the situation itself but also how our poor characters feel.

And here comes the fire stuff...I interpreted the fire as a mean to be alive, or somthing like that. You know,,,I mean, the fire does nothing have to do with the fact that they are good ones. The boy is just assuring that they are not gonna die. Sorry for not giving the perfect answer.

  4. I do think that they are rationalizing their existence and their choice to not eat people a little bit, but don't you support that rationalization and hope they maintain it through the end of the book? I do!
